This specimen was lot 343 in Aureo sale 269 (Barcelona, July 2015), where it sold for €950 (about US$1,228 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''1797. Carlos IV. Santiago. DA. 8 escudos. Levísimos golpecitos pero buen ejemplar. MBC+.'' (Chile, Carlos IV, eight escudos of 1797, Santiago mint, light nicks but a nice example, choice very fine.)"</blockquote> The specimen was one of a series struck 1791-1808 during the reign of Charles IV. It bears Charles' name and the bust of Charles III, who died in 1788. The bust of Charles IV appears on the four escudos but not the eight escudos. This type is fairly common for Spanish colonial gold.
