This specimen was lot 471 in Ponterio sale 164 (New York, January 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. 8 Escudos, 1799-PP. Charles IV (1788-1808). Nice strike. NGC Unc Details--Surface Hairlines." While silver coins from Bolivia exist in vast quantities, gold from Bolivia is scarce. For the colonial period, Colombia may be regarded as the most prolific issuer, followed by Mexico, followed by Peru. Bolivia, Chile and Guatemala are minor sources. This type was minted 1791-1808 and is scarce.
