Kunker sale 263, lot 1927
This specimen was lot 1927 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €10,500 (about US$13,564 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ZADAR (ital. ZARA) Unter französischer Herrschaft. 18 Francs 40 Centimes (4 Onces) 1813, geprägt während der Belagerung durch österreichische Truppen. Gekrönter Adler zwischen ZARA - 1813 in Viereck (großer Stempel)//Wertangabe in Viereck. Mit 3 Randpunzen: SB, SP und MF. Von großer Seltenheit. Nur 1.000 Stück geprägt. Feine Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich Zadar (ital. Zara) ist eine Hafenstadt in Kroatien. Sie war bis 1797 im Besitz von Venedig, im 19. Jahrhundert Hauptort des österreichischen Dalmatien; seit 1947 gehört sie zu Kroatien. (city of Zara, under French occupation, 18 francs and 40 centimes (4 ounces) of 1813, struck during the Austrian siege. Obverse: crowned eagle divides "ZARA" and date; reverse: value and three punches, "SB," "SP," and "MF." Very rare, only 1,000 struck, toned, very fine to extremely fine.)"
Dalmatia, long Venetian territory, fell to the Austrians in 1797, then to Napoleon's empire in 1807, then back to Austria 1813-1918. It is currently part of Croatia. During the siege mentioned above, the French struck one, two and four ounce pieces.
