Sincona sale 54, lot 245
This specimen was lot 245 in Sincona sale 54 (Zurich, May 2019), where it sold for 16,000 CHF (about US$19,040 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Würzburg, Bistum, Johann Philipp von Schönborn, 1642-1673. 5 Dukaten 1652, Nürnberg. Münzmeister G. F. Nürnberger, Abschlag von den Talerstempeln. Brustbild halbrechts, davor das vierfeldige Wappen Mainz/Franken/Würzburg/Mainz mit dem Schönborner Herzschild. Rv. Von Flammen umgebene, auf Mondsichel stehende Madonna mit Jesuskind und Zepter, unten zu den Seiten die geteilte Jahreszahl 16-52. Sehr selten. Vorzügliches Exemplar mit Goldpatina. Etwas gewellt. Kleine Kratzer und Randfehler. (Germany, bishopric of Wurzburg, John Philip of Schonborn, 1642-73, five ducats of 1652, Nuremburg mint, struck using thaler dies. Obverse: half-length bust, below quartered arms of Mainz, Franconia, Wurzburg and Schonborn. Reverse: Madonna and Child stand on a crescent moon, date below. Very rare, Extremely fine specimen with gold toning, Slightly wavy, Small scratches and edge nicks.)"
The Bishop of Wurzburg struck ducats on occasion but most are rare, particularly the multiple ducats. This was struck using dies intended for the thaler of the same year (Dav-5980).
