Wurzburg 1554-SK thaler Dav-9975
This specimen was lot 752 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $763.75. The catalog description noted, "GERMANY. Wurzburg. Taler, 1554-SK. Melchior Zobel Von Giebelstadt Zum Guttenberg (1544-58). NGC AU-53. Sword between 'D' and 'V' of 'DVX'. Some minor doubling to strike. Old envelope toning with some russet and blue highlights. From the Rockaway Collection." The Bishop of Wurzburg struck thalers on occasion but most are rare. St. Kilian was an Irish monk who converted Franconia and Thuringia to Christianity. He was martyred around 686 A.D. by beheading, which is why he is usually depicted holding a sword.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
