Schulman sale 347, lot 332

This specimen was lot 332 in Schulman sale 347 (Amsterdam, April 2015), where it sold for €400 (about US$515 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "piedfort dukaton of zilveren rijder. 1666. type i. Ruiter naar rechts boven gewestelijk wapentje, mmt. vijf-bladige bloem aan het begin van het omschrift. Kz. gekroond wapen, jaartal boven de kroon. Piedfort op dubbele zwaarte van 64.90 g. RRR. uiterst zeldzaam. Zeer fraai. uit veiling Schulman 283 van 17 mrt. 1986, no. 140." This type was issued in various forms throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries until 1793, when revolutionary French armies occupied the United Provinces and terminated their independence. The SCWC does not list the double ducaton for the seventeenth century.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.
