This specimen was lot 1013 in Aureo sale 291 (Barcelona, Spain, April 2017), where it sold for €2,800 (about US$3,594 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1641. Guerra dels Segadors. Vilafranca del Penedès. 5 rals. Anv.: Armas catalanas entre V y R. (...)CIPA-T CAT-ALON 1641. Rev.: Roel en 2º y 3er cuartel. -VIL(...)C-A PEN-ITENS. Principat. Leve defecto de cospel. Rayitas. Ex Áureo 26/04/2006, nº 461. Ex Colección Balsach. Muy rara. MBC. (Vilafranca del Penedès, War of the Reapers, five reales of 1641, Obverse: crowned arms of Catalonia divide 'V-R'; reverse: rings in second and third quarters, pellets in first and fourth quarters. Planchet defect, scratches, very rare, very fine.)"
During the War of the Pyrenees (ended 1659), the French occupied Catalonia with the collaboration of the locals and struck coins there. This type was struck in Vilafranca del Penedès 1641-42 only and is very rare.
