This specimen was lot 15105 in Heritage sale 410 (Long Beach, June 2006), where it sold for $2070. The catalog description[1] noted, "Ferdinand VII 4 Reales 1819-BS Caracas, Lion in the upper left of the cross, nicely toned AVF, a problem-free example of this rare type with great eye appeal." The SCWC notes another variety with the castle in the upper left of the cross. Both types are much scarcer than the similar two reales, which was manufactured by the royalists in Caracas, Venezuela, in the millions. In 1821, the republicans led by Bolivar recaptured Caracas and it became part of the Republic of Gran Colombia.

Recorded mintage: 18,000.

Specification: 9.5-10.3 g, silver (unknown fineness but likely debased).

Catalog reference: KM C7.1.
