Aureo sale 291, lot 686
This specimen was lot 686 in Aureo sale 291 (Barcelona, April 2017), where it sold for €1,600 (about US$2,053 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1594. Felipe I (II). València. 4 rals. Anv.: PHILPVS (...)I (G)RACIA. (V)ALNCIA MAIORICARVM. Ex Colección Crusafont 27/10/2011, nº 1086. Muy rara. MBC+. (Valencia, Philip II, four reales of 1594. Obverse: bust facing; reverse: crowned arms of Valencia. Very rare, choice very fine.)"
This rare type is unlisted in Cayón, who mentions a similar coin for 1592 (Cayón-3846) and undated (Cayón-3796 thru -3802). This coin is too light to be a true four reales tho it may have been clipped.
