Valais in the 1500's
This specimen was lot 51 in Sincona sale 5 (Zurich, May 2012), where it sold for 12,000 CHF (about US$14,766 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ, Wallis Matthäus Schiner (1499-1522). Guldiner 1498. Av. Kaiser Karl der Grosse nach links auf einem auf Thron sitzend, übergibt ein Schwert an den vor ihm knienden Bischof Theodul. Rv. Familienwappen mit Schwert, Mitra und Krummstab in einem Wappenkreis von 16 Wappen der Zehnten von Wallis. Selten. Beidseitig kleinere Schrötlingsfehler, sonst sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Switzerland, canton of Valais, guldiner of 1498. Obverse: Charlemagne, enthroned, offers sword to kneeling bishop Theodore; reverse: family arms with sword, miter and staff with 16 municipal shields around. Rare, minor planchet defects, good very fine to extremely fine.)"
The canton of Valais is not recorded as having issued any coins in the seventeenth century, so it is safe to say this early issue is rare.
