This type was struck AH 1240-1255 in the name of the Ottoman sultan Mahmud II. Tunisia was under the control of the Ottomans for centuries until lack of financial resources forced it into dependence on France, which made it a protectorate in 1881. The specimen shown is billon in composition, though it appears to lack even a modicum of silver.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 11-11.5g, billon.

Catalog reference: KM 90.
