This specimen is the first coin issued by Trinidad and Tobago as part of the F.A.O. series and the first Trinidadian coin of that denomination. Trinidad in the Caribbean is not usually considered to be in need of food aid but its economy has suffered since the collapse of its sugar plantations in the mid-nineteenth century. The island, a British colony from 1814 to 1962, is best known to Americans as the home of the steel drum and calypso music.
