Sincona sale 39, lot 4044
This specimen was lot 4044 in Sincona sale 39 (Zurich, May 2017), where it sold for 120 CHF (about US$144 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA, Maria Theresia, 1740-1780 17 Kreuzer 1764. Karlsburg. Sehr schön. (Holy Roman Empire, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, seventeen kreuzer of 1764, Karlsburg mint. Very fine.)"
We don't know what prompted the issue of this denomination, which competed with contemporary ten, fifteen and twenty kreuzer, but various types were issued 1751-65 from all over the empire. This type of 1763-65, tho not mintmarked, is distinguished by the Transylvanian arms on the eagle's breast on the reverse.

Recorded mintage: unknown but somewhat scarce.

Specification: 6.12 g, .542 fine silver, .106 troy oz ASW; this specimen is 6.01 g.

Catalog reference: KM 644 (listed under Transylvania), Herinek 1056.
