Poland H3049-31318r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31318 in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, September 2016), where it sold for $646.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Thorn. Jan Casimir 18 Groszy (Ort) 1653 HI-L AU55 NGC, Thorn mint, Hans Jacob Lauer as mintmaster, An attractively toned piece with much residual luster and only minor unevenness of strike." This denomination, struck at Thorn in various styles 1650-68, seems to be unique to Poland. The SCWC notes that it traded for a quarter thaler. The SCWC lists only mintmaster HD L for 1653.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-35, Kop-8316, Dutkowski/Suchanek-1605 (R2).
