Kunker sale 293, lot 744
This specimen was lot 744 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €1,100 (about US$1,483 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHER ORDEN, DEUTSCHER ORDEN IN MERGENTHEIM Johann Caspar von Ampringen, 1664-1684. Reichstaler 1673, Mainz. Hübsche Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Teutonic Order in Mergentheim, John Caspar of Ampringen, 1664-84, thaler of 1673, Mainz mint. Hadsome patina, very fine to extremely fine.)"
Altho the Teutonic Order is best remembered in history for its activities in Prussia and Latvia, these scarce thalers were minted for them in Mainz.
