Kunker sale 293, lot 742
This specimen was lot 742 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,617 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHER ORDEN, DEUTSCHER ORDEN IN MERGENTHEIM Karl von Österreich, 1618-1624. Reichstaler 1624, Nürnberg. Fast vorzüglich. (Teutonic Order in Mergentheim, Charles of Austria, 1618-24, thaler of 1624, Nuremberg mint. About extremely fine.)"
Altho the Teutonic Order is best remembered in history for its activities in Prussia and Latvia, these scarce thalers were minted for them in Nuremberg. From the photo, this specimen appears to have been polished.
