Sumatra 1804 4 keping
This specimen was lot 1581 in Ponterio sale 173 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $999. The catalog description noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. Sumatra. East India Company. 4 Keping, 1804. Thick flan. Very attractive. NGC PROOF-65 BN. From the Sanjay Gandhi Collection." This type was struck by the British East India Company during its occupation of Sumatra during the Napoleonic Wars. After the Vienna Conference in 1815, Indonesia was returned to the Dutch but the English kept their colonies in Malaya, especially Singapore.
