This specimen was lot 31720 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "British Colony. Victoria Specimen 1/4 Cent 1872-H SP64 Red and Brown NGC, Heaton mint. A fiery and glimmering piece made all the more desirable by flashes of blue around the denomination on the reverse and mirror-like fields." The type was struck in 1872-75 and 1883 and is scarce despite the large mintage. It was converted to bronze for the 1884 issue (KM 7a) and given a reeded edge for the 1889-91, 1898-99 issue (KM 14) when production for circulation ceased.
