Aureo sale 232, lot 399
The specimen shown was lot 399 in Aureo y Calico sale 232 (Barcelona, March 2011), where it sold for 1,300 euros (about US$2,145 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Isabel II (1833-1868). 1851. Barcelona. 20 reales. Bellísima. Brillo original. Muy rara así. EBC+. (Isabel II, 1833-68, twenty reales of 1851, Barcelona, nice color, very rare thus, choice extremely fine.)
This Spanish twenty reales de vellon was struck in Barcelona during the middle years of Isabel II (1833-68). This type was struck in Barcelona, Madrid and Seville 1850-55. Instead of the traditional "M" and "S" mintmarks the issues are distinguished by six, seven or eight pointed stars on the reverse (for Madrid, Seville and Barcelona). The "de vellon" coinage system, used 1808-50, was finally dropped. The twenty reales was reduced to 26.91 grams and the copper maravedis dropped in favor of 1/20, 1/10 and 1/5 reales. Unfortunately, the government, financially prostrate as usual, was unable to remint the old coins, which continued to circulate as before. This specimen is an overdate unlisted in the SCWC. Despite the substantial mintage, Barcelona mint issues are priced ten times those of Madrid and Seville, themselves not common coins.

Recorded mintage: 1,055,000.

Specification: 26.91 g, .900 fine silver, .760 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 593.1, Cal-152, Dav-333.
