Aureo sale 232, lot 275
This Spanish four reales was struck at the Barcelona mint in 1822-23. The catalog price is low for specimens in circulated condition. Unlike the traditional four reales, which was half a peso, this coin was worth only a fifth of a peso. This specimen was lot 275 in Aureo y Calico sale 232 (Barcelona, March 2011), where it sold for 325 euros (about US$536 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1822. Barcelona. SR. 4 reales. Tipo ´cabezón´. Golpecito canto. Bellísima. Brillo original. Muy rara así. EBC+. (Four reales of 1822, Barcelona mint, "Big head" type, tiny nick, beautiful luster, rare thus, choice extremely fine.)
