Áureo y Calicó sale 347, lot 306
This specimen was lot 306 in Áureo y Calicó sale 347 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €52,000 (about US$68,625 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1762. Carlos III. Sevilla. JV. 8 escudos. Kr. indica "rare" sin precio). Tipo "cara de rata". Mínimo defecto de acuñación en canto. Muy bella Brillo original. No figuraba en la Colección Caballero de las Yndias. Rarísima. Sólo hemos tenido este ejemplar. EBC/EBC+. (kingdom of Spain, Charles III, eight escudos of 1762, Seville mint. "Rat nose" type, minor edge defect, very handsome, original luster, not in the Caballero de las Yndias collection, extremely rare, the only example known to us. Extremely fine or better.)"
Eight escudos were minted at all the colonial mints in the early part of the reign of Charles III. Some mints used the bust of his brother Ferdinand and others, including Mexico and Nuevo Reino, used the "rat nose" bust of the young king. In 1772, the gold was debased from 0.917 to 0.901 fine and many of the older issued were melted, leaving the type very scarce. The "rat nose" issue from Madrid (1760-61) and Seville (1762) is prohibitively rare and this is the first of the type we have posted on the wiki.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, .917 fine gold, .050 troy oz AGW, this specimen 27 g.

Catalog reference: AC. 2179, Cal.Onza 952, Cayón-12755.
