Rhodesia in 1942, from Hammond's atlas

Southern Rhodesia was made into a self-governing colony by Britain in 1923. Coinage commenced in 1932. The colony was merged with its neighbors to form the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland in 1953, which grouping disintegrated in 1964. In 1965, the white elite declared independence from Britain but was unable to subdue the black majority. In 1980, the blacks were admitted into the government and the country was renamed Zimbabwe. For issues of 1954-64 see Rhodesia & Nyasaland.
