This specimen was lot 3552 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $1,725. The catalog description[1] noted, "1838 MS 1 escudo. Cuzco mint. South Peru. MS-63 (NGC). Radiant sun, legends and date around/value within wreath. Rich orange gold, lustrous and somewhat reflective in the fields. some trivial hairlines. An exceptional specimen of this scarce one year type. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."
