Aureo sale 269, lot 152
This specimen was lot 152 in Aureo sale 269 (Barcelona, July 2015), where it sold for €50 (about US$65 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1619. Felipe III. Messina. IP. 3 taris. MBC-. (Sicily, Philip III, three tari of 1619, Messina mint, about very fine.)"
The portrait is of Philip III of Spain. The Spanish Hapsburgs ruled Naples and Sicily as part of their Aragonese inheritance from the death of Ferdinand the Catholic in 1517 until the death of Charles II in 1700. Three taris equaled one fourth of a piastra.
