Künker sale 293, lot 1334
Holstein in 1648
This specimen was lot 1334 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €4,200 (about US$5,661 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN, HOLSTEIN-GOTTORP, HERZOGTUM, Christian Albrecht, 1659-1694. Reichstaler 1673, Hamburg. (Germany, duchy of Holstein-Gottorp, Christian Albrecht, 1659-94, thaler of 1673, Hamburg mint. Very rare, fine patina, very fine. This bust may have been executed in Hamburg, for the Duke temporarily resided there because his brother-in-law, King Christian V of Denmark, had driven him out of his lands. However, only the first half of 1673 can be considered for the time of the coinage, as the mintmaster, Matthias Freude, left the city of Hamburg in June 1673.)"
The dynastic affairs of this duchy were complicated even by German standards as the dukes were related to the king of Denmark and even the czar of Russia. Most coin issues are rare, including this one minted 1673-74.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28.79 g.
