Saxony in 1648

This specimen was lot 50541 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $734. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. Taler, 1736-FWoF. Dresden Mint. NGC AU Details--Mount Removed. Friedrich August II (1733-63). Toned with lustrous blue highlights." Most Saxon thalers of the period 1660-1760 are scarce. The elector's attempt to conquer and rule Poland as well as Saxony impoverished both countries. This type was issued every year 1734-56 but it is not common.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-2665; KM-880; Schnee-1026.
