Saxony 1693 thaler rev Goldberg 72-5620.jpg

This specimen was lot 5620 in Goldberg sale 72 (Los Angeles, February 2013), where it sold for $1,207.50. The catalog description[2] noted, "German States - Saxony. Klippe Taler, 1693. Johann George IV. Receiving the Order of the Garter. Monogram in garter, arms in four corners. Reverse: Capped wreath with crossed swords. Toned. NGC graded AU-58." Klippe thalers were originally issued during sieges and other wartime conditions when regular minting technology was unavailable. Later, klippes were issued for ceremonial occasions and are generally rare. This one, interestingly, is more common than the regular issue (Dav-7647) of 1691-94.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-7649; KM-642.
