This specimen was lot 1674 in Jean Elsen sale 117 (Brussels, June 2013), where it sold for €350 (about US$552 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ALLEMAGNE, SAXE, Moritz (1547-1553), AR Taler, 1549, Annaberg. Droit: B. cuirassé à droite, tenant une épée sur l'épaule. Revers: Ecu entre deux annelets, sous la date. Très Beau. (Germany, Saxony, Maurice (1547-53), silver thaler of 1549, Annaberg mint. Obverse: armored bust to right bearing a sword; reverse: shield between two rings, date above. Very fine.)"
Saxony, one of the larger divisions of Germany and blessed with numerous silver mines, issued large numbers of thalers. This Davenport type is an early date for Saxony and is listed for 1548 and 1553.
