Kunker sale 263, lot 1158
This specimen was lot 1158 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €5,250 (about US$6,782 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SACHSEN, KURFÜRSTENTUM Johann Friedrich der Großmütige, 1532-1547. Doppeltaler 1539, Buchholz, auf die Einlösung der Burggrafschaft Magdeburg. Selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Sehr attraktives Exemplar mit feiner Patina, fast vorzüglich. (Electorate of Saxony, John Frederick the Magnanimous, 1532-47, double thaler of 1539, Buchholz mint, on the redemption of Magdeburg. Very rare, especially in this quality, very attractive with handsome toning, choice extremely fine.)"
This rare type was accompanied by a 1½ thaler.
