This specimen was lot 22422 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it sold for $329. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony-Ernestine. Taler, 1538. Johann Friedrich I & Georg (1532-47). PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, EF Details Secure Holder. Cleaned long ago now with attractive old envelope tone." Saxony, one of the larger divisions of Germany and blessed with numerous silver mines, issued large numbers of thalers. This type is noted for 1534-39.
