This specimen was lot 705 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $2,585. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxe-Altenburg. 2 Taler, 1852-F. NGC MS-63. Nicely struck with reflective surfaces and mildly cameo devices. Iridescent old envelope toning. A very nice example of this scarce one year type from a mintage of only 9,400 pieces. From the Rockaway Collection." Duke Joseph (1834-48) issued some double thalers 1841-47 (Dav-811) but this is the only double thaler of duke George (1848-53).
