This specimen was lot 713 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $1,527.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxe-Weimar. Taler, 1605-WA. Johann III (1573-1605). NGC MS-61. Finest certified. Commemorating the Death of Johann III. Dark toning with iridescent highlights. Nice strike and very attractive. From the Rockaway Collection." This particular version of Saxe-Weimar would lapse on the duke's death in 1605. It would be revived several times before World War One wiped away all the German principalities. This type is scarce but not rare.
