This type was struck for the kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1937 (plain edge, KM 21.1) and again at the Philadelphia mint in 1947 (KM 21.2, shown here). It is accompanied by quarter and half ghirshes (20 ghirsh = one riyal). in 1963, the coinage was reformed so that 100 halala = one riyal and the ghirsh was dropped.

Recorded mintage: 7,150,000.

Specification: copper-nickel, reeded edge.
