The first specimen was lot 28048 in Heritage sale 3019 (Chicago, April 2012), where it sold for $1,610. The catalog description[2] noted, "Nicholas I Rouble 1843 CПБ-AЧ, Crowned Imperial eagle with legend around/Crowned date and value in wreath, MS63 NGC. Sharply struck with no egregious flaws. The obverse has bright luster beneath light golden patina, while the reverse exhibits variegated charcoal toning." The second specimen was lot 40755 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $2,644. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. Ruble, 1843-CNB AY. PCGS MS-64 Secure Holder. Lustrous with beautiful toning. Second finest graded by PCGS." This type was struck 1832-58 in large quantities but is today very rare in nice condition. The preceding type (Dav-282) is very similar but with a "wings down" eagle. An 1843/2 overdate exists but is awarded little premium.

Recorded mintage: 5,320,000.

Specification: 20.73 g, .868 fine silver.
