This specimen was lot 4340 in Goldberg sale 69 (Los Angeles, May, 2012), where it sold for $1,725. The catalog description [2] noted, "Russia. 5 Rubles, 1842-SPB AU. Nicholas I. Eagle. Reverse: Value and date. NGC graded MS-63." This type was struck at the St. Petersburg mint 1832-46. Large numbers were made but few survive. In 1886, the standard was revised to match the French twenty francs d'or, resulting in a weight reduction to .186 troy oz.

Recorded mintage: 2,180,000 plus a few proofs.

Specification: 6.54 g, .917 fine gold, .193 troy oz AGW.
