This specimen was lot 22930 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $1,645. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. 15 Kopek, 1778-CNB. Catherine II (the Great) (1762-96). PCGS AU-55 Secure Holder. 'BCEPOCC.' at end of legend, RARE as listed in Bitkin and Diakov. Well struck. Fantastic flannel gray toning, a choice example." This is a common date of a style issued 1778-82, with the 1782 being rare. The variety mentioned in the auction description is also rare. This denomination was struck in several styles during the reign of Catherine the Great, after which the denomination was dropped until the 1860's.
