This specimen was lot 4563 in Goldberg sale 84 (Los Angeles, January 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description noted, "Russia. 15 Kopeks, 1769-ММА. Catherine II. Mark in field by neck. Original mint luster with light gray toning. NGC graded AU-58." This type, issued 1767-75 from Moscow and 1778-94 from St. Petersburg, introduced the denomination. Catherine the Great began life as an obscure German princess but became czarina after the murder of her husband.
