In 1910, Portugal, having ousted her king, dropped the réis and adopted the escudo, divided into 100 centavos. The specimen shown is from a type struck to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the epic poem Os Lusiadas, the first major work written in Portuguese. It was the last of a series of five silver commemoratives struck 1968-72 in the last years of the dictatorship. The escudo was retired in 1999 when Portugal joined the euro.

Recorded mintage: 1,000,000.
