Portugal 1944 1 escudo
This specimen was lot 1634 in Ponterio sale 173 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $881.25. The catalog description noted, "PORTUGAL. Escudo, 1944. NGC MS-65. Second lowest mintage of the series. Lustrous and attractive with very light toning." The specimen shown is a rare date of a type struck for Portugal 1927-68. It superseded a silver type struck 1915-16 (KM 564) and in turn was replaced by a smaller bronze coin struck 1969-79. The escudo was retired in 1999 when Portugal joined the euro. The mintage given below must have been largely 1945's as the latter date is much more common.
Recorded mintage: 993,000 for 1944-45.
Specification: 7.5 g, copper-nickel, 26.7 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-578, Gomes-25.09.
