King Carlos ruled from 1889 until his assassination at the hands of an anarchist in 1908. His son Manuel II, shown here, ruled for only two years before he was deposed and the Republic established. This 500 réis piece was issued 1908 and 1909; the 1908 is common, the 1909 is scarce.

Recorded mintage: 2,500,000.

Specification: 12.5 g, .917 fine silver, .368 troy oz ASW, designed by Valancio Alves.
