This specimen was lot 5201 in Goldberg sale 72 (Los Angeles, February 2013), where it sold for $661.25. The catalog description[2] noted, "Portugal. 5000 Reis, 1838. Maria II, 1834-1853. Diademed head left. Reverse: Arms. Noticeable scratches. Rare. NGC graded About Uncirculated, Details (Scratches)." This scarce type was struck 1838 and 1845 only. In 1851, the weight was reduced to 8.96 g (KM 476.2). For 1838, there is also a 2500 réis (KM 475), also rare.

Recorded mintage: 2,410.

Specification: 9.56 g, .917 fine gold, .281 troy oz AGW, 23.5 mm diameter.
