Peru 1984 500 soles rev DSLR.jpg

This type, issued 1984 from Lima, reflects the accelerating pace of inflation which devastated Peru in the late 1970's and 1980's. This issue commemorates the 150th anniversary of the birth of Admiral Grau, hero of the Battle of Iquique. Unfortunately, both the admiral and the ship were lost in the action, and Chile went on to defeat and occupy Peru. A similar, non-commemorative type appeared in 1985, after which the 500 soles denomination was retired.

Recorded mintage: 16,962,000.

Specification: brass.

Catalog reference: KM 289.
