Peru 1979 5000 soles rev DSLR.jpg

This type, issued 1979 from Lima, reflects the accelerating pace of inflation which devastated Peru in the late 1970's and 1980's. This issue commemorates the centennial of the naval Battle of Iquique, in which Admiral Grau in the Huascar defeated the Chilean navy in the War of the Pacific. Unfortunately, both the admiral and the ship were lost in the action, and Chile went on to defeat and occupy Peru. The 5000 soles denomination was used for several other commemoratives until 1982 but never appeared as a circulating coin.

Recorded mintage: 100,000.

Specification: 31.10 g, .925 fine silver, .925 troy oz ASW.
