Peru 1845-Cuz A escudo
This coin was minted in Cuzco, Peru, in 1845. The first specimen was lot 3566 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $862.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "1845 A 1 escudo. Cuzco mint. MS-62 (NGC). Types as above. Lustrous yellow gold. Light planchet flaws in right obverse field, but very nice looking. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942." The third specimen was lot 36028 in Heritage sale 3038 (Dallas, January 2015), where it sold for $1,410. The catalog description[2] noted, "Republic gold Escudo 1846-A MS63 NGC, Cuzco mint. Choice Mint State with essentially full mint brilliance. Struck from slightly bulged dies, as often the case for this type. Decidedly scarce and quite desirable in this fine preservation. From The Law Collection." This type was struck at Cuzco 1826, 1830, 1840 and 1845-46 and at Lima 1826-29, 1833, 1850 and 1855. It is much scarcer than the prices in the SCWC would indicate.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.37 g, .875 fine gold, .095 troy oz AGW; the first specimen: 3.18 grams, 18.70 mm diameter.
