This specimen was lot 3270 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $1,997.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 8 Reales, 1840-MV. Arequipa Mint. NGC AU-50. VERY RARE two year type. Typically weak strike done with worn dies but with little in the way of actual circulation evidence and free of any detracting marks or signs of contact. pleasant light gray tone throughout with attractive subdued underlying luster." At this point, the branch mints Cuzco and Arequipa were winding down their operations after being very busy in the 1820's and 30's. The last Cuzco eight reales was issued in 1840 (KM 142.9) and the last Arequipa eight reales was in 1841 (KM 142.11, an extreme rarity). The Pasco mint was open and made an irregular issue of four reales 1843-57 (KM 151.4 thru KM 151.10). This issue of 1839-40is very rare.
