Aureo sale 242, lot 207
The specimen shown was lot 207 in Aureo y Calico sale 242 (Barcelona, March 2012), where it sold for 17,000 € (about $26,394 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Carlos III (1759-1788). 1768. Lima. JM. 8 escudos. Primer año del segundo tipo ´cara de rata´. Sin indicación de valor. Insignificantes marquitas. Muy bella. Brillo original. Muy rara y más así. EBC+. (Charles III (1759-88), eight escudos of 1768, Lima mint, first year of the modified "rat nosed" bust, with denomination. Tiny marks, very handsome, original luster, very rare, extremely fine plus.)"
This eight escudos was struck 1768-72 as a slightly modified version of the type issued 1763-68 (KM 70).

Reported Mintage: unknown. All dates are rare.

Specification: 27.07 g, .917 fine gold, .798 troy oz ASW.
