This coin was minted in Lima, Peru, of a type struck 1763-71. This specimen was lot 3480 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $1,265. The catalog description[1] noted, "1766 1 escudo. Lima mint. AU-53 (NGC). Types as above. Lustrous yellow gold, lightly worn but essentially unflawed, a choice example of this challenging denomination among issues of the design type. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."
