The first specimen was lot 3990 in Goldberg sale 85 (Los Angeles, June 2015), where it sold for $270. The catalog description[1] noted, "Italian States: Papal/Roman States. Scudo of 10 Paoli, 1797. Bologna. Crowned arms. Reverse: Madonna and child above city. A few natural flan flaws, traces of luster. NGC graded AU-50. Ex: Purchased from Heritage by private treaty in 1987." The second specimen was lot 666 in Jean Elsen sale 132 (Brussels, March 2017), where it sold for €135 (about US$171 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"ITALIE, BOLOGNE, Gouvernement révolutionnaire (1796-1797), AR scudo da 10 paoli, 1797. D/ Ecu entre deux rameaux. R/ La Vierge à l'enfant sur une nuée au-dessus de la ville. Très Beau. (Italy, city of Bologna, revolutionary government (1796-97), silver scudo of ten paoli, 1797. Obverse: city arms between two branches; reverse: the Virgin and Child on a cloud hover over the city. Very fine.)"
This date is a two year type struck in 1796-97 for Pius VI (1775-99) at the Bologna mint. In Bologna, one scudo = 10 paoli = 100 bolognini. The scudo superseded the piastra after 1740.

Specification: 26.42 g, .917 fine silver.
