This specimen was lot 25006 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $7,637.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Papal States - Bologna. Pius VI gold 10 Zecchini 1786 XII, AU58 NGC, a choice example of this large and impressive gold type with aged patina and well-struck details. The reverse features the Pontiff seated on a cloud with coats of arms below. Rarely seen in the market, and this is an exceptionally appealing coin." This rare type from the Bologna mint, the largest gold coin issued by the papacy in the eighteenth century, is listed for 1786-87 only. It is accompanied by a gold five zecchini.
