Papal St H3064-33327r.jpg

This type was minted in 1699 during the reign of Innocent XII. The SCWC lists three different grossi for 1699 but does not provide photos for any of them. Catalog number KM 609 (shown here) has the obverse legend PORTA AVREA; KM 610 has PORTA COELI and KM 611 has PORTA PARADISI. The grosso was five baiocchi, while the piastra, the Italian equivalent of the German thaler, was 105 baiocchi (3½ testone). This specimen was lot 33327 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "Papal States. Innocent XII Grosso 1699 MS65 PCGS, Rome mint. A superbly presented dark argent specimen with flints of gold that serve to brighten the devices and give the fields a subtly violet hue. Only slightly off-center, all of the details are fully struck with the stippled portion of Innocent's shield being particularly stunning."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.49 g, silver, .917 fine.

Catalog reference: KM 609, Ber-2277.
